Matthew Kaiser
Director of Product Management, Sphera
I run product like a portfolio, not a to-do list.
15+ years in product management taught me the same lesson every good investor learns the hard way: most ideas fail, so your job is to find the cheap ways to figure out which ones won't — before you spend real money finding out.
At Sphera, I lead product development for our product stewardship software with that mindset front and center. Every initiative starts as a thesis: What are we betting on? What would have to be true for this to win? What's the fastest, cheapest experiment that tells us if we're right? Some bets get small checks and a fast leash. The ones that prove themselves get real investment — engineering time, GTM support, roadmap priority.
This approach allows our team to move fast. The real priority, however, is to be disciplined with scarce resources in a business where the stakes (ensuring regulatory compliance, safety, and sustainability with data that companies build real decisions on) are too high for guesswork.
If you're building products in regulated, high-stakes spaces — or just want to talk about treating product bets like an investment thesis — let's connect.
QUESTIONS I CAN ANSWER
- How do I validate product ideas before investing significant time and resources?
- How do I prioritize my product roadmap and make smarter product decisions?
- How can I build a disciplined product strategy that balances customer needs with business goals?
